    Hey everyone!

I was just doing a bit of research on the viability of 2h weapons and trying to figure out if I should report the DPS of 2h weapons on 2.0live as a bug and I made a pretty interesting discovery.

It looks like the current issue where 2h weapons roll same or lower DPS than 1h weapons is a VERY niche problem specific to lvl60 affixes being crafted around the +%damage affix that no longer rolls up to 50%.

    - Examples -

As you can see here, the max possible DPS on a 1h weapon is almost exactly the same as that of a 2h weapon at level 60.

This is a MAJOR issue because one of the only ways 2h weapons make up for having FAR less total stats than 1h weapon is by having significantly higher DPS.

In this case, we are looking at 1477.3 / 1411.9 = 4.63% more DPS

    Let's check out level 70 instead ...

This is a totally different story.
The level 70 affixes were obviously made MUCH better than the level 60 affixes. This causes the 2h weapon to have significantly higher max DPS than the 1h weapon.

In this case we are looking at 2781.3 / 2274.3 = 22.29% more DPS

Okay ... but talk to me about how this matters?!

Well, the MAJOR concern with 2h weapons is that you stand to lose a TON of DPS.
In 2.0live, this is certainly the case. You lose the 15% IAS from dual-1h as well as a full socket's worth of 110% CHD.
In return, you gain 4.63% DPS.

Let's take a look at a sample character who has 40CHC 400CHD and 30IAS with the 1477.3 DPS 2h staff.
If they did nothing but switch their Diabo to dual-1h Fist weapons with 1411.9 DPS each, they would now have 40CHC 510CHD and 45IAS as well as 4.63% lower weapon DPS.

In this example the 2h setup has a staggering 19.77% lower total DPS than the dual-1h setup.

These are the kinds of numbers people are seeing on live right now at level 60 with loot 2.0. They are looking at drops of almost 20% to their paperdoll DPS and simply CAN'T justify using a 2h weapon.

So, let's take a look at that same character in RoS at level 70.
    40CHC 400CHD 30IAS with a 2781.3DPS 2h weapon vs 40CHC 530CHD 45IAS with two 2274.3 DPS 1h weapons.
Surprisingly, this is a net less of only 8.63% total DPS.

A 300k pDPS dual 1h char would become a 276k pDPS character with an exactly equal 2h setup.

    - Conclusion -
    • 2h weapons are not NEARLY as bad at level 70 as they are at level 60.
    • 2h weapons are still LESS TOTAL DPS than dual 1h weapons.
    • 2h weapons are still FAR LESS viable than dual 1h weapons due to loss of stats / legendary affixes as well as loss in DPS.

Dual wield was always superior in paper dps for the reasons you stated (extra crit/socket, 15% attack speed, also +APS from EF), but despite that 2 handers were extremely effective for farming due to their resource efficiency, single cast damage from DoTs. Dual wield may win when it comes to doing sustained damage, but when it comes to doing a single pass through an area and one-shotting mobs as you go by, 2 handers have the advantage there.

This is somewhat true ... but the DPS difference (excluding Echoing Fury) between 1h and 2h setups in 1.0.8 were near 0.

The removal of CHD from weapons and the removal of the 50% damage affix (lowered to 10) both hit 2h weapons REALLY hard. Less total available CHD means the CHD from sockets is that much more valuable and that means 2h weapons are less effective than before.

Combine that with dual-1h granting 2x legendary affixes while 2h only grants one and you start to get a pretty bad picture.

If anyone is going to use a 2h weapon, I will do so ... but I was unable to make it work in Beta no matter how hard I tried so I am not exactly holding my breath.
